could this possibly be a transmission problem?

Could be, or electrical. Check to make sure your tiss/toss are plugged up the right way. Have you hooked up a super shifter to it?

It has been the experience of many mechanics I know, that when a truck dies when you put it in...it is more than often a bad fuel injection pump. Is it worse when the truck gets warmed up?

Something to mull over.

Normally the stalling in reverse is a bad torque convertor or TCC.

I've had similar issue. trans light on but had no codes. TCM was too hot to touch, replaced with PN#tcm2100bb and problem resolved BUT there is only 1 NSN for the TCM but has 2 different part #s *******BA and ******BB. Turns out BA was incompatible with our model trans but trying to order and get BB is a gamble. I hope this makes sense.
