WRONG SEALER ON GEARED HUBS!!!!

Postby Grandpa3523 » 08 Apr 2015, 07:55

WE HAVE FOUND ABOUT 98% OF VEHICLES COMING INTO OUR SHOP FROM RBE UNITS HAVING RTV SEALER ON THE STEERING ARMS. THE CORRECT SEALER IS LISTED IN TM 9-2320-387-24-1 SECTION 6-12, AT THE TOP OF THE TASK UNDER MATERIALS/PARTS IS Sealing compound, anaerobic
(Appendix C, Item 58) AND IN TM 9-2320-387-24-2 APPENDIX C ITEM 58 IS "SEALING COMPOUND: anaerobic gasket (05972) 51831". WE HAVE HAD ABOUT 50% OF THE HUBS CLII AND CLIII WHEN THE LTI WAS COMPLETED. I KNOW THIS SEALER IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAT RTV BUT IT DOES NOT CONFORM TO TM REQUIREMENTS, OUR QC DEPTMENT WILL NOT PASS THE PMCS WITH RTV IN THAT LOCATION. THIS CAN MAKE FOR A BETTER PIECE OF EQUIPMENT AT MAY NOT FAIL IN THE FIELD WHEN NEEDED.

JUST MY 2 CENTS, I KNOW IT MAY BE HARD TO GET THE HIGHER UP's TO BUY OFF ON THE EXTRA COST BUT YOU CAN SHOW "BLACK AND WHITE" PROOF THAT IT THE RIGHT THING TO DO...

New requirements from HAZMAT require those things to be added to an AUL before it can be ordered. Being a realist a Marine will use the path of least resistence. RTV when used properly will work in this application, though it's not ideal and may cause premature failure if excess silicone gets into the gears. Take care not to over-do it here.

If the sealer CANNOT be ordered through the supply system (no NSN) or be purchased at the servmart (off the shelf). I recommend submitting a PQDR, in order to capture the fact that the sealant being called out on the TM or IETM is not easily acquired ( has to be special ordered). These types of issues become bigger issues if it does not make it to the right people. There are alternatives out there (RTV), but it's not an alternative when a specific sealant is being called out in the TM or IETM. There is a reason why they call out specific sealants and that's because it has been tested.

If you're refering to changing the TM then you'll need to do a NAVMC 10772. But be sure to run it through your MMO first before submitting it.

don't forget that your supply has a GPC that can be used to buy products from comercial sources such as the direct from the manufacturer or even home depot.
