I agree with SUPERMOD, most likely a piece of the old rod is stuck up in there. They are made of hardened steel and break pretty cleanly sometimes. Look up in there with a flashlight or feel the old rod, if it's rough on one end the other part is up there. Now here's the trick for removing it if it's up there. IF you have a common 22 get the suction pump that comes with it. Shove it in there and have someone yank the handle quick on the pump. Will suck it right out.
